Dental students work with students at RCLSB to show them proper dental care

Students from Roy Cisneros Leadership School for Boys are smiling brightly this summer, but not just because school is out. During the school year, students had the chance to get a dental check-up, without having to leave campus.

Through a partnership with UT Health-San Antonio School of Dentistry & Nursing, students received full dental evaluations by dental students and dental faculty.

“Not many people know that Cisneros Elementary has its very own two-seat full-service teaching dental clinic,” says EISD Nursing Coordinator, Jennifer Alaniz. “Every participant also gets a free toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss in addition to individual oral hygiene instruction and nutritional counseling.”

Students also learned about the impact healthy foods have on oral health and lessons on tobacco prevention. The dental students incorporate hands-on activities to make the lessons fun for students and so it will leave a lasting impact.

EISD has partnered with UTHSA since 1986 to bring preventative dental training and treatments to students. Currently, RCLSB is the only school providing the opportunity for sophomore dental students and senior nursing students to collaborate in this way while serving the community.
